Using Video in your online marketing

Posting and sharing video on your website and social media platforms is a great way of connecting to your customers, whether its your own video or linking/embedding someone else’s.

We’ve all seen the viral video campaigns.   They range from cute to bizarre to emotional and more often than not gain media attention because of the amount of people who have viewed them and the impact this then has on the person concerned.  Case in point, in yesterday’s news the story of the boy who was bullied and fought back.

Here’s another, a video showing a babies’ reaction to his mother blowing her nose (!) that’s gathered well over 9 million views in just one week(!), proving that babies are always appealing…click here to view (embedding has now been disabled)
And this one, which is a planned campaign from a little known brand of blenders that turned into an youtube viral sensation because of its quirky creativity (you may have already seen this as its from 2007 (9.6 million views!).  This company then went on to release a whole series of blending items, such as glo-stick, even an iPad.

This latest article via mashable outlines 4 Innovative ways to use Web Video for Small Business, by giving ways a smaller business can cost-effectively utilise video within its content-strategy.  I’ve added to that as well…

.

some great Ways to use Video in your Online Marketing

1.  Encourage your customer/client to send in videos of them using your product

2.  Make a video instead of writing updates, sharing news or offering special promotions or even introducing yourself, like this example

3.  Product demonstrations or a how-to video of your product in use

4.  Publicity Stunts (here’s a great example:  Business Man Found Hanging – BillBoard Stunt in Auckland

5.  Get someone to film you when you are next giving a presentation (maybe at a networking event) and upload

6.  Short interviews with someone you meet at an event – perhaps just using your smartphone camera.

7.  Use Skype or video-calling to talk directly to your customers

.

Remember, YouTube is a great tool and a must-have as part of your integrated social media strategy – you can set up your own Profile/Channel, favourite other videos, upload your own and customise the Channel to your business graphics.

You can then embed it directly on your website, or on your blog post, or both.  Plus link to it from your social media status update or email marketing.  This can be done at separate times, to regularly reinforce your message and all the while, drive traffic to your website!

Great tips! I especially like the one when your customers make videos of themselves using your products. I suppose that usually requires you to offer a prize and it takes more effort because some of the videos you get back will be not be usable (poor lighting, etc.), but I do think that’s probably the most effective. Can’t beat a testimonial from a living, breathing happy customer! Thanks for the tips!

Fantastic points, Kerry. Online video is definitely the future and should be incorporated into every social media campaign! You have great ways to effectively use them – YouTube is certainly under utilized right now for social media, but anyone following these tips will be off and running to a great start.

Kerry, thanks for pointing out some less traditional ways to incorporate video into your online media. Video has been shown to hold your audience’s attention longer than text, so this post is a great nudge for us to increase our efforts in this area.

Videos work great for your relationship building strategy. When you open up the cameras and let people know who you it establishes deeper trusts. Nice Post!

Great ideas. Some of these like the product demos I have put to use already, but I think using video for customer testimonials is a great idea. Filming during next presentation is another good idea I haven’t considered. Glad I read this.
